George Washington De Long (b. August 22, 1844, Manhattan, New York-d. October 31, 1881, Matvay Hut, Sakha (Yakutia) Republic, Russia), United States Naval Officer and explorer. He graduated form the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, in 1865, then rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Emma Jane Wooton De Long was born March 11, 1851 and died November 25, 1940. She commissioned the sculptor Leonard Craske to design a monument for the grave of her late husband, Lt. Commander George W. De Long, leader of the Jeannette Arctic Expedition in 1879-82. William Bradford accompanied this expedition as a painter and was present at the ship's departure from San Francisco to the polar regions.
